Our Story

Long Story Short is a small, family-owned vineyard in Red Hill, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. In 2007 the Rowe family bought a farm here that had spent its life running cattle and fruit trees. After more than 35 years in the liquor industry, wine had become a genuine passion, and with it the dream of owning and working a vineyard of their own.

That dream is now a reality. Today our focus is a simple one: to make the best wine we can from one of the best wine regions in the country.

We are not trying to be the biggest name on the Peninsula. We make a small range of wines, by hand, from a site we know intimately, and we are happy to let the wines do the talking.

How we make it

Everything starts in the vineyard and stays close to home. Our Single Vineyard wines are 100 percent hand-picked from our Red Hill site, with only the most premium barrels selected for the final blend.

Our Pinot Noir is fermented in small open pots using a mix of wild and cultured yeasts, gently hand-plunged each day, then matured in French oak for around twelve months. Our Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed and barrel fermented, stirred weekly on its lees to build texture, with a measured amount of malolactic fermentation to keep the fruit fresh and bright.

It is unhurried, hands-on winemaking. The kind that does not scale easily, which is rather the point.

Our place

Long Story Short is nestled in the elevated hinterland of Red Hill. Red Hill is one of the most distinctive sub-regions of the Mornington Peninsula, renowned for its cool-climate precision and striking natural beauty. Rolling hills, rich volcanic soils and maritime influences from both Port Phillip and Western Port Bays create ideal conditions for elegant, site-driven wines - particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Long Story Short's site produces exceptional quality and expression, delivering wines with bright acidity, fine structure and a sense of place that is unmistakably Mornington.
